That is a sensible place to begin, Helen. Use the lowest effective dose, avoid overfilling the drum and change one laundry product at a time so you can judge the difference clearly.
Do the sheets genuinely handle mud and food stains? Eco detergents I tried before smelled nice but did not clean school uniforms properly.

I would still pre-treat dried mud, grease and old food stains, just as I would with a strong liquid detergent, and use the heavier-load dose when the directions call for it.
Would you use one sheet or two for a muddy football kit?
Shake or rinse off loose mud first, pre-treat the marked areas and follow the heavy or stained-load dose on the pack. Avoid packing the drum tightly because the laundry still needs room to move and rinse.
