Choosing a Gentler Laundry Routine for Little Ones
Practical, non-alarmist tips for a gentler family laundry routine — pH, fragrance, rinse-out and simple checks.

The short version
- Near-neutral pH is a sensible default
- Fragrance-free removes the most common variable
- Overdosing leaves more residue — use less
Babies and small children go through a lot of laundry. Here are calm, practical ways to make the routine gentler — no scare stories. A note first: if anyone has a diagnosed skin condition, your GP or dermatologist is the right source of advice. This is general guidance, not medical advice.
Look at pH
Formulas closer to neutral (around 6–7) tend to be gentler on skin and fabric than strongly alkaline ones — a sensible default for clothes worn against the skin.
Consider fragrance
Fragrance is a common reason people move to a 'sensitive' formula. To remove the variable entirely, choose genuinely fragrance-free rather than 'lightly scented'.
Rinse matters
Overdosing detergent leaves more residue in fabric. With concentrated formats like sheets it's easy to use less than you think and still get a good clean.
Checks before you buy
- Is there a true fragrance-free version?
- Is the full ingredient list published?
- Is the pH stated and near neutral?
- Can you start with a small pack first?
